# Creating a subscription (recurring payments)

> Charge on a repeating schedule, without an end date.

## At a glance

- **Intended for:** Everyone
- **Available in:** All plans
- **Reading time:** 4 minutes
- **Last updated:** 31st May 2026

## Quick summary

From "Create new payment", choose "Create a subscription". Name it, set the amount and a frequency (every week, every 2 weeks, or every month), and choose a mode: scheduled, amount cap, or partial payment. The subscription then bills the customer on that cadence.

## Overview

Some charges never stop—monthly programmes, memberships, ongoing services. A **subscription** handles these as **open-ended recurring payments**, billing the customer on a repeating schedule.

## Step 1 – Start a subscription

From the **Payments** page, click **"Create new payment"** and choose **"Create a subscription"**.

## Step 2 – Name it and set the amount

Give the subscription a **name** and set the recurring **amount**.

## Step 3 – Choose a frequency

Pick how often it bills:

- **Every week**
- **Every 2 weeks**
- **Every month**

## Step 4 – Choose a mode

### Scheduled

Bill the set amount on each cycle—the classic subscription.

### Amount cap

Recur until a total cap is reached, then stop.

### Partial payment

Collect against a payment in parts over the cycles.

## Step 5 – Save and automate collection

Save the subscription. To collect each cycle automatically, pair it with **direct debit** (such as PayTo)—the customer authorises once and every cycle is collected for them.

Use a **subscription** for "until further notice" billing and a **payment plan** for a known total with an end date. Picking the right one keeps your reporting clean.

## Managing subscriptions

On the **Subscriptions** page you can view subscriptions by **frequency**, **mode** and **status** (active, canceled, or expired), **manage** any subscription, **send its details by email**, or **cancel** it. Cancelling stops any further payments from being created.

## Frequently asked questions

### What's the difference between a subscription and a payment plan?

A payment plan splits a known total into a fixed number of instalments and then ends. A subscription is open-ended recurring billing for ongoing services or memberships, on a repeating frequency.

### What frequencies are available?

Every week, every 2 weeks, or every month.

### What are the subscription modes?

Scheduled (bill on the cadence), amount cap (recur until a total cap is reached), and partial payment (collect against a payment in parts). Choose the one that matches how you bill.

### How does the customer get charged automatically?

Pair the subscription with direct debit (such as PayTo). Once the customer authorises it, each cycle is collected automatically.

### Can I cancel a subscription?

Yes. From the subscription's actions you can cancel it, after which no further payments are created. You can also send the subscription details to the customer by email.

### Where do I see all subscriptions?

On the Subscriptions page, where you can view them by frequency, mode and status (active, canceled, or expired).
