# UPI Autopay

> UPI Autopay lets an Indian payer approve a recurring mandate in their UPI app. What the ₹15,000 PIN-free limit means for tuition instalments, explained plainly.

**UPI Autopay is the recurring-payment feature of India's UPI, the system behind nearly every phone payment in the country. The payer approves a mandate once — amount or ceiling, frequency, duration — by entering their UPI PIN in their payment app, and scheduled collections then run automatically. Debits above ₹15,000 still ask the payer to approve each one with their PIN.**

The scale is the context: Autopay processed roughly 808 million mandate collections in July 2025 alone. Indian schools, coaching academies and universities already run fees on it, and the system has payer-friendliness built in as a rule, not a courtesy — the payer's bank must send a notification at least 24 hours before every debit.

For tuition-sized amounts, know the ₹15,000 line. Debits up to **₹15,000 (about US$175)** collect hands-free. Above that, the app notifies the payer and asks them to approve the debit with their PIN — so a ₹1.2 lakh instalment is really "auto-request": the schedule, the amount and the reminder arrive automatically, pre-filled, inside the app where the money lives, but the payment still ends with the family's thumb. Weaker than a BECS or SEPA pull; an enormous upgrade on "please wire us the money by Friday". (Separately, a one-off UPI payment to a verified educational institution inside India can be as large as ₹5 lakh.)

The boundary, as with Brazil's [Pix](/glossary/pix.md), is the border. UPI is domestic — rupees, Indian accounts. A school abroad can't register an Autopay mandate directly; it connects through a collection partner licensed by the Reserve Bank of India, which collects in rupees locally and delivers the money abroad. And any family paying a foreign school should know about **TCS**, the advance tax Indian banks add to foreign remittances above ₹10 lakh per year.

The routes in, the limits and the tax arithmetic are all in [UPI Autopay for tuition from India](/blog/upi-autopay-tuition-payments-india/), part of [our direct debit series](/blog/direct-debit-for-schools-complete-guide.md).
