# Remittance advice

> A remittance advice is the note that accompanies a payment and tells the receiver what it covers. Why a per-student breakdown decides whether commission reconciles.

**A remittance advice is the note that accompanies a payment and tells the receiver what it covers. In international education it usually itemises a commission payment: which students, which intakes, the commission rate applied, any deductions or clawbacks, and who absorbed the transfer fees. Without one, a lump sum landing in a bank account is a puzzle rather than a payment.**

Picture the difference from the receiving end. AUD 4,830 lands in an agency's account in Mumbai. As a bare deposit, it is homework: which schools, which students, which intake, why not the AUD 5,100 the agency expected? With a remittance advice — student, school, course, commission the school paid, split applied, deductions, fees — the same deposit is a proof. Every line the statement omits is a line the receiver has to take on faith.

This is where whole days of the month go. Ask any agency finance person what "reconciliation" means in practice and the answer is: matching remittance advices (or their absence) against bank statements and their own student records, by hand. A school that pays twenty agencies a lump sum each with no breakdown has exported twenty days of detective work; a school that itemises has exported none. In [sub-agent](/glossary/sub-agent.md) networks the stakes are higher still, because the sub-agent never sees the school's money and has no way to verify their split except through the master's statement.

Don't confuse the words: a **remittance** is the money itself; the remittance advice is the paper *about* the money. It also isn't a receipt (which the payer gets) or an invoice (which asks for money — see [RCTI](/glossary/rcti.md) for the education-flavoured version of that document).

The paperwork trio — obligation document, remittance advice, ledger entry — is laid out in [sub-agent commission payments](/blog/sub-agent-commission-payments.md); generating these automatically as payments clear is what [Qualy's accounting automation](/features/automatic-accounting-for-ed-agents.md) is for.
