# Pix (and Pix Automático)

> Pix is Brazil's instant, free bank-to-bank payment system, run by the central bank. Pix Automático adds recurring collection: one in-app consent, automatic debits.

**Pix is Brazil's instant payment system, created and run by the Banco Central do Brasil since November 2020: money moves between any two Brazilian accounts in seconds, around the clock, free for individuals. Pix Automático, launched on 16 June 2025, adds recurring collection — the payer consents once in their banking app, and future charges are debited automatically on schedule.**

Inside Brazil, Pix is not *a* payment method; it is *the* payment method — the default way families pay for nearly everything, including school fees. The variant worth knowing by name is **Pix Dinâmico**: a QR code generated fresh for each charge, carrying the exact amount, the payer and an expiry, so the payment reconciles itself the moment it arrives. No more guessing which "J. SILVA" paid which invoice.

**Pix Automático** is what makes the system matter for instalment plans. One authenticated consent in the banking app replaces a debit authorization form, with guardrails the payer sets themselves — maximum amount, frequency, expiry. A failed charge retries itself up to three times across seven days, failures report instantly with a reason, and — unusual in this family — there is **no chargeback at all**: the design prevents bad debits with limits and easy cancellation instead of reversing them afterwards. For a language school collecting R$2,500 a month, that is direct debit without the dispute tail.

The boundary is the border. Pix settles in reais, between Brazilian accounts. A college in Sydney or Toronto can absolutely be paid *by* Pix — but the money lands in Brazil first and then needs converting and moving, which is the leg a cross-border payment platform handles. A truly international Pix is on the central bank's roadmap, not in your hands yet.
