# PayTo

> PayTo lets an Australian payer approve a payment agreement inside their banking app; each debit then clears in real time. How it differs from BECS direct debit.

**PayTo is Australia's modern way to collect payments from a bank account, launched in 2022 on the country's real-time system, the New Payments Platform. The payer approves a payment agreement — amount, frequency, duration — inside their own banking app; each collection then clears in real time, around the clock, and a failed one returns an instant reason.**

The difference from [BECS](/glossary/becs.md), Australia's traditional direct debit, is information. A BECS Direct Debit Request is a form: the account isn't verified until the first debit, and a bounce surfaces days later with a vague code. A PayTo agreement is a **live digital object**: the account is confirmed real and open at the moment the student authorizes it, the student can view, pause or cancel the agreement in their banking app, and the school sees the status change the moment it happens — before the next instalment date, not after it silently fails.

For a school running instalment plans, that changes the job. If a student's AUD 1,200 monthly collection fails, you know the same day, with the reason — insufficient funds, cancelled agreement — instead of discovering it on Thursday's report and guessing. Your payment plans are, functionally, a loan book; PayTo is the first Australian system that lets you watch it in real time.

Two clarifications. PayTo is not replacing BECS on any deadline — the old June 2030 end-date was removed in December 2025, and in 2025 PayTo agreements carried just 0.1% of the value BECS direct debits did, so both will coexist for years. And PayTo is not PayID: PayID is a nickname for an account (a phone number or email that shows the payee's name before a transfer); PayTo is the standing permission to collect.

The decision piece — when to default new plans to PayTo and when BECS still earns its keep — is [PayTo vs direct debit for Australian tuition](/blog/payto-vs-direct-debit-tuition-payments-australia/); both run under one roof in [Qualy's direct debit for schools](/features/direct-debit-for-schools.md).
