# Payment mandate

> A payment mandate (direct debit authority) is the payer's standing permission for a school to collect from their account: DDR, SEPA mandate, PAD agreement, PayTo.

**A payment mandate — also called a direct debit authority — is the payer's standing authorization that lets a school or agency collect payments from their bank account. Every direct debit system requires one: a Direct Debit Request in Australia, a SEPA mandate in Europe, an ACH authorization in the US, a PAD agreement in Canada, an in-app payment agreement on PayTo or Pix Automático. No mandate, no debit.**

The mandate is the legal heart of [direct debit](/glossary/direct-debit.md), and its practical value shows up on the worst day, not the best one. When a payer disputes a debit months later — and most systems give them a window to — a clean, timestamped authorization record turns the dispute into an inconvenience. Without one, it's a donation: the payer's bank reverses first and asks questions later, and you have nothing to answer with.

Setup quality is destiny. The difference between an instalment book that fails rarely and one that fails constantly is mostly decided before the first debit: pre-fill every field you already know (every account number a student types by hand is a [dishonour](/glossary/dishonour.md) waiting for debit day), capture the mandate at enrolment while motivation is highest, and give the payer a one-screen summary — amounts, dates, who to call *before* cancelling at the bank. The nastiest failure mode is the silent cancellation you discover as a bounced instalment.

Where mandates live is changing. The old world is a signed form in the school's filing cabinet — a PDF the payer half-remembers. The new systems ([PayTo](/glossary/payto.md), Pix Automático, UPI Autopay) put the mandate inside the payer's own banking app: verified against a live account at creation, visible to both sides, cancellable in a tap and enforced by the bank. That collapses both the "I never authorized this" dispute and the school's uncertainty about whether the account even exists.
