# Education agent aggregator

> An education agent aggregator (ApplyBoard, Adventus…) holds the school agreements, routes applications from its agent network, and keeps a slice of each commission.

**An education agent aggregator is a marketplace that sits between schools and agencies: it signs agreements with hundreds of institutions on one side and recruits a network of agents on the other, routing students from the second group to the first. The school pays its normal commission to the aggregator, which keeps a slice — the take rate — and passes the balance to the agent who recruited the student.**

ApplyBoard and Adventus are the names most people know, with a dozen platforms behind them. Structurally, an aggregator is a [master agent](/glossary/master-agent.md) at industrial scale: joining one makes your agency, technically, a [sub-agent](/glossary/sub-agent.md) of the platform. What you get is real — instant access to institutions you couldn't contract with alone, the application chase handled, and the platform carrying the relationship risk when a school changes rates or disputes a claim.

What you give up is the take rate, and it hides well. It can be a straight commission haircut, a subscription fee, a premium tier, or simply the platform sitting on your payout for a few weeks — but it is never zero, because a marketplace that takes nothing isn't a business. Be especially unsentimental about "100% commission" offers: a generous split is a customer-acquisition price, not a permanent one.

The decision has actual math. Going direct with a school costs setup work but pays the full percentage forever; the aggregator costs nothing up front but takes its slice on every student forever. The break-even — annual cost of holding a direct agreement divided by the take kept per student — usually lands at **three to seven students per school per year**. Below that, the aggregator genuinely wins; above it, you are paying a percentage in perpetuity to avoid a one-time setup.
