# Dishonour

> A dishonour is a direct debit the payer's bank returned unpaid — a bounced payment. The three causes, each system's retry rules, and why the reason matters.

**A dishonour is a direct debit that failed: the school attempted to collect, and the payer's bank returned the payment unpaid. It is the Australian and British word for a bounced debit — the US equivalent is a return. Every dishonour has one of three causes: not enough money in the account, wrong or dead account details, or an authority the payer has cancelled.**

The three causes demand three different responses, which is why diagnosing before retrying matters. *Insufficient funds*: retry — but on payday, not tomorrow; an AUD 1,200 instalment that bounces on the 1st (rent day) will often clear three days after the student's wages land. *Dead account details*: retrying is pointless; fix the [mandate](/glossary/payment-mandate.md) first. *Cancelled authority*: stop debiting and pick up the phone — recollecting on a cancelled mandate is how a school turns one bounce into a formal dispute.

The systems differ sharply in how fast they tell you which one you have. [PayTo](/glossary/payto.md) and Pix Automático report instantly, with a reason. [BECS](/glossary/becs.md) makes you wait days and often tells you vaguely. That lag is more than an annoyance: how a payer handles this instalment is the best signal you'll get about the next one, but only if it reaches you in time to act.

Retry rules are scheme rules, not house rules. US ACH permits an insufficient-funds return to be re-initiated up to two times; a Canadian pre-authorized debit can be re-presented once, within 30 days, for the identical amount; Pix Automático retries itself, three attempts across seven days. And retries aren't free — banks and payment platforms commonly charge a **dishonour fee** per failed attempt, so hammering an empty account five times buys you five fees and no money.

The operational playbook — diagnosis, retry timing, and pairing every debit with a reminder — is in [the direct debit guide for schools](/blog/direct-debit-for-schools-complete-guide.md) and [the complete guide to student payment reminders](/blog/student-payment-reminders-complete-guide.md); reminders that react to dishonour events are a [Qualy feature](/features/student-payment-reminders.md).
