# Direct debit

> Direct debit, defined in plain language: the payer authorizes once and the school collects each instalment automatically. Mandates, dishonours and where it fits.

**A direct debit is a payment the receiver initiates: the payer authorizes the school or agency once — through a mandate — and the school then collects each instalment straight from the payer's bank account on the agreed schedule, without the payer acting again. It is the opposite of a bank transfer, where the payer has to remember and act every single time.**

The word doing the work is *pull*. Most ways students pay — bank transfer, Pix, card links — are **push payments**: the payer starts every transaction, and the school waits. Direct debit inverts the direction. Once the [mandate](/glossary/payment-mandate.md) exists, the school initiates, the bank executes, and the student's only job is to keep the account funded.

That matters most for instalment plans. An AUD 12,000 course paid over ten months is, on push payments, ten separate acts of remembering by a busy twenty-something in a new country. On direct debit it is one signature and a schedule. This is why instalment billing at language schools, colleges and universities quietly runs on it across five continents.

There is no single worldwide direct debit — it is a family of national systems with the same idea and different rulebooks: [BECS](/glossary/becs.md) and [PayTo](/glossary/payto.md) in Australia, [SEPA direct debit](/glossary/sepa-direct-debit.md) in Europe, [ACH](/glossary/ach.md) debits in the US, [pre-authorized debit](/glossary/pre-authorized-debit.md) in Canada, [Pix Automático](/glossary/pix.md) in Brazil, [UPI Autopay](/glossary/upi-autopay.md) in India. Each is domestic: the payer needs a local bank account.

Two things it is not. It is not a recurring card payment — direct debit moves money between bank accounts, with no card network in between, which is why it usually costs a flat fee rather than a percentage. And "collected" is not "final": a debit can bounce (a [dishonour](/glossary/dishonour.md)), and most systems give the payer a window to reclaim money after it settles — eight weeks under SEPA's core scheme, 60 days for US consumers.

The full country-by-country treatment, including when *not* to use direct debit, is in our [complete guide to direct debit for schools](/blog/direct-debit-for-schools-complete-guide.md); the collection side is what [Qualy's direct debit for schools](/features/direct-debit-for-schools.md) automates.
