# BECS

> BECS is the Australian system behind traditional direct debit: bulk files, a BSB and account number, and a signed Direct Debit Request. How it works and its future.

**BECS — the Bulk Electronic Clearing System — is the Australian network behind traditional direct debit. The payer signs a Direct Debit Request, and the school then collects from their BSB and account number, with payments processed in bulk files that settle over one to three or more business days. It works with virtually any Australian bank account, which is why it still carries most of the country's recurring payments.**

BECS is the workhorse: usually the cheapest recurring option in Australia, compatible with any account that has a BSB and account number, and thoroughly familiar to payers. For a college collecting AUD 1,500 monthly instalments, it simply works — most of the time.

Its weaknesses are informational, and they show up on the bad days. The account is **not verified at setup**: a Direct Debit Request is just a form, so a mistyped account number is discovered when the first debit bounces, not when the student signs. And a [dishonour](/glossary/dishonour.md) is reported **days after the attempt**, often with a vague reason code — a Monday debit can come back Thursday, leaving you guessing whether the student is broke, gone, or just gave you the wrong digits. Its successor, [PayTo](/glossary/payto.md), was designed specifically to close that gap: live account verification, instant failure reasons, agreements visible in the banking app.

On its future: BECS was scheduled to be retired by June 2030, but AusPayNet removed that end-date in December 2025. There is no switch-off deadline. The direction of travel is still toward the real-time New Payments Platform, and the industry is drafting the roadmap through 2026 — but a school setting up BECS debits today is using a current, supported system, not a condemned one.
