# ACH

> ACH — the Automated Clearing House — is the US network for moving money between bank accounts in batches. How ACH debits collect tuition, and the 60-day catch.

**ACH is the United States' bank-to-bank payment network — the Automated Clearing House. It moves money between US accounts in batches, under rules set by Nacha, and runs in two directions: ACH credits, which the payer pushes (payroll, refunds), and ACH debits, which the receiver pulls — the American form of direct debit, and the usual engine behind US tuition instalment plans.**

For a school collecting tuition, the interesting half is the **ACH debit**: the student signs an authorization once — on the web, by phone, or on paper, each with its own code — and the school collects each instalment from their US checking account. Settlement takes one to two business days, with a Same Day option, and fees are low and flat: a $2,000 instalment costs cents to collect, where a card would take a percentage.

The catches are about time, not price. An ordinary bounce — code R01, insufficient funds — comes back within about two banking days. But a *consumer* can dispute a debit as unauthorized for up to **60 calendar days after it settles**, and their bank will reverse it first and ask questions later. Nacha also caps how many of your debits may come back as unauthorized (half a percent), so sloppy authorization records aren't just a dispute risk — they can get your collections shut off. Your authorization file is the whole defence.

Two common confusions. ACH is not a wire: a wire is same-day, effectively irreversible and expensive; ACH is batch-processed, cheap and returnable. And ACH is not "autopay on a card" — no card exists in the flow, which is precisely why it is cheaper and why the [mandate](/glossary/payment-mandate.md) paperwork matters more.

Like every system in this family, ACH is domestic: US dollars, US accounts. An international student can only pay this way once they have a US bank account. The full picture — authorization types, return codes, retry limits — is in [ACH direct debit for US tuition](/blog/ach-direct-debit-tuition-payments-usa.md), and the family it belongs to is mapped in [the direct debit guide for schools](/blog/direct-debit-for-schools-complete-guide.md).
